Favorite Matthew Crawley Moments Per-episode: episode 7 (series 1)
-“Do you love me enough to spend your life with me?”You can hear his voice almost breaking, because this love means so much to him! *__* There are things Mary isn’t able to explain to Matthew and that makes him so confused! Poor darling!
The thing that has ALWAYS killed me in this scene is Matthew’s “You were sure”. Because there’s no doubt in his mind - that implies to me Mary had given him a definite indication she’d been going to accept, she’d let him know she WAS sure of her answer… and then for poor Matthew, the only thing that’s changed is his prospects, and all of a sudden she isn’t sure any more.
Kind of related, his question is never “Do you love me?”, but “Do you love me enough” - which again, just makes it THAT much more painful. He knows she loves him, he knows it. Just… not enough. And that’s almost worse. :(
Except that she knows that she loves him a lot, but she can’t tell him why she’s not giving an answer because she thinks that he’d hate her forever. The poor things. :(
I had never thought about it, but the ENOUGH point is a brilliant deduction. Clearly, between ep6 and ep7 Mary must’ve given him reason to believe her answer would’ve been yes and that she DID love him. He knows, which is worse because in his eyes it means Mary would purposely throw him over because of money and not for a lack of love - it’s more painful to him because it shows Mary’s faulty, pragmatic judgment. Although, to be quite honest, I understood Mary. She did want him, she did love him, and there was that lie between them (and she couldn’t bear his reaction, could she?) plus…it is a huge choice. To go from the daughter of an Earl to the wife of a country solicitor. Sometimes love is not enough; she’s used to a certain lifestyle, could she afford to lose it? On the long run, would she resent him for it? Financial problems have put a strain on more than one marriage. What if she made both of them miserable because she was feeling frustrated? It’s something you take into consideration, marriage is a loooooong business. But could she tell all this to Matthew? Matthew who sees everything in black and white - but life is in all kinds of shades of gray. So I don’t know. Love them both - you’ll be alright!
Can we also take a moment to appreciate Matthew’s GLORIOUS hair in this GIF set? And eyes? His eyes are so icy in this, the lightest blue/gray, almost white. It’s scary and vampiry and sexy as hell. I would’ve said YES YES YES NOW TAKE ME HERE UNDER THIS TREE AND LET’S MAKE BABIES MY SEXY VAMPIRE WITH THE HEART OF GOLD.
I don’t think however the money was the biggest issue in here. It added to the confusion, but I think her secret was always the biggest factor of this decision.
This aesthetics of this scene… SO PRETTY.
I definitely think Pamuk/secrecy was the biggest issue, but I do think the money/lifestyle change added to it as well. For a girl who’d never considered a marriage purely of love with little/no material benefit - how does she know she loves him enough? She doesn’t. For Matthew, that’s all he’s ever expected/wanted - and of course he can’t understand Mary’s difficulty.
If it weren’t for Pamuk, Mary would have accepted him before it ever became an issue. But that held her back until it did become an issue with Cora’s pregnancy. Both of them together? How could she tell him? And it’s the indecision that kills Matthew, because she was sure. And now she’s not. Waaaaah!
(Agreed on the GLORIOUSNESS of his beauty in this scene. GAH.)
Definitely, but even when she had to consider the prospects/life changes and money as an issue, you can clearly see that she still leaned to accept him (The whole sentimental heart x pragmatic mind). But in a very Persuasion kind of move, Lady Rosamund put even more doubts in her mind. The poor thing.
It was such a messy situation. But I like to think it was just not meant to be at the time (And I even think it was at points something they didn’t need). No one was wrong or right. And it helped them to mature those feelings and to become better people in the process (And also more realistic). Their heartbreak made those feelings even stronger and teach them to value those feelings.
It’s a stab in my shipper chest, but it’s worth in the long run.
Agreed.
I also think what a marker of their relationship it is that he does not hold back here, not one little bit. He’s pissed, he’s hurting, and he’s damn well going to let her know it. He absolutely lets rip at her and I LOVE it.
